Nothing lasts forever, unfortunately, and at some point, you may find yourself stepping into a possible employer’s office ready to answer interview questions. In fact, you may even be picking out your interview outfit as we speak in order to impress, feeling a bit nervous about how to best handle tough interview questions.

You want to stand out from the crowd and land the job, so it’s important to ensure that you not only show up on time, but that you keep the following interview question tactics in mind in order to accomplish your goals.

How to answer interview questions like a boss:

1. Never criticise previous employers

As true as your accusations may be, it doesn’t look too good for you if you plan on bad mouthing your previous employers. You will most certainly be asked why you left your previous job, in which case you need to be as diplomatic as possible. Instead of using the negatives for why you chose to look for different employment opportunities, answer with the positives by letting them know that you’ve reached the end of your growth threshold.

2. Give enough info, but not too much

When answering questions, it’s important to be open and honest by giving enough information for the interviewer to be happy with the answer, but don’t deliver a speech. They may be seeing 10 other individuals after you, so they want to keep it as short as possible. Answer what’s necessary and keep the rest for a later stage.

3. Speak clearly. Don’t rush

Good communication skills are invaluable; especially if you plan on entering the sales industry. Speak clearly. Take you time answering questions instead of rushing through the process. You want to make sure the interviewer understands what you’re trying to say without getting confused and irritated.

4. Never interrupt the interviewer

Let them finish their question before jumping in to answer. You may be eager to give a great answer, but if you don’t let them finish what they’re about to say, you will come across as being a bit rude. This is absolutely the last thing you want to portray.

5. Be confident, even if you have to fake it

You may be extremely nervous (which is normal), but it’s crucial to come across as being confident. Confidence will get you far. However, it’s important to remember the difference between arrogance and confidence. Never confuse the two.

6. Show passion for what you’ve done

The interviewer is going to want to see the passion for what you’re interviewing for; hopefully. Remember, without passion, every day is going to be a struggle. More importantly, passion is what’s going to set you apart from all the other candidates. Show them what you’re made of.

7. Avoid playing with your hands

Nervousness is normal, but you want to be able to hide it as much as possible. One of the most obvious signs that you’re nervous is excessive playing with your hands or fingers. If this is something you tend to do in stressful situations, place your hands on your lap for the duration of the interview.

8. Most importantly, smile

You may not have the necessary qualifications for a specific job opening or even the experience, but it’s important to come across as being friendly regardless. People like friendly people. It’s as simple as that. You’ll be more approachable and seem more transparent, which is highly attractive in candidates. Show off your sparkling smile and let your presence do the rest.
