Employee Tips: How To Avoid The Burnout
Working long, tiring hours with few rewards can and often do lead to the burnout of employees – resulting in the reason for half of employee turnover. It’s no wonder that employees rarely stay with one particular company for many years – especially when they’re seen as numbers instead of human beings.
As an employee, it’s important to find coping mechanisms to prevent burnout in the office – resulting in higher efficiency and a happier career. Here’s how you can prevent burnout before it even happens.
1. Learn to say no
You simply can’t be everything to everyone, so there will come a point in time when you’d need to say ‘no’ in order to maintain your sanity and gain your life back. Chances are, you’re either a workaholic or you’re too hard on yourself – thinking that you need to do everything you possibly can in a day in order to be successful.
2. Put yourself first, daily
After a long and busy day, make time for yourself. If cleaning your house makes you feel better and initiates relaxation, do that. If reading a book is your favourite thing to you after hours, ensure that you read at least one chapter per night. It’s crucial that you make time for yourself and enjoy some down time. There needs to be a break in between work.
3. Avoid being a perfectionist
None of us are perfect so why are you trying to be? You’re only making life harder for yourself when everyone else around you seems fine with being normal human beings. Remember, there’s a big difference between being a perfectionist and doing your best in the office in order to deliver quality work.
4. Get enough sleep
Sleeping between the hours of 10 pm and 2 am will be most beneficial if you want to lower your stress as well as your cortisol levels. Chances are, your cortisol levels are probably high due to excessive stress and not taking the time you need to de-stress. Getting enough sleep will help your body and mind recuperate in order to take on another busy day at work. Never skip on valuable sleep.
5. Don’t overload downtime
Downtime is meant for relaxation or spending time with the people you love. However, it’s important to remember not to plan too many activities during your off days. Busy holidays tend to add to your burnout due to not being able to get enough rest. So if you do have a few days off, ensure that you take as much time to rest as you do to partake in busy activities.
